CHINA, Qing dynasty (1644-1912) - Lot 181
CHINA, Qing dynasty (1644-1912) A quadrangular-base letter stamp featuring three sculpted chimeras at the top, softly walking on the lateral cut sides; an adult chimera and its two young. Inscription on reverse: shui wei zhun ping*. Intense emerald jade. Dimensions: 4 x 4 cm at base, height: 3 cm. * Note: This philosophical expression could be translated as something like "water defines balance". Indeed, calm water has a perfectly horizontal flat surface that evokes balance. For a ruler, the reminder of this Taoism/Confucianism thought invites us to lead with accuracy, while maintaining a certain stability. This type of seal was used on paintings, poems, albums, scrolls, manuscripts, etc. Provenance: French collection.
