* Rare painted canvas, court scene, - Lot 40
* Rare painted canvas, court scene, workshop of a Dutch East India Company trading post, Coromandel Coast, India, early 18th century Fine cotton canvas painted and dyed by mordanting and resist in more than eight colors. Six European figures are gathered in a garden: on the left, a seated woman and a man of quality converse while holding a glass in their hands, the latter wearing a small Dutch beak hat and elegant red embroidered stockings. In the center, another woman is seated, leaning against a gnarled tree laden with flowers and pomegranates, holding a feather in her hand, perhaps to fan herself? To her right, a second man in full regalia holds a decanter of wine, which he is about to pour into two glasses presented to him by a servant. Border decorated with garlands of flowers and pomegranates, doubled, stretched on a stretcher and framed, Framed, (accidents and restorations , pasted on a canvas glued to a stretcher). 172 x 239 cm. The depiction of figures is unusual in Indian production for the European market, which favored small-scale plant decorations for clothing canvases and large-scale compositions for furnishings, particularly those featuring the palempora tree of life. This panel is one of a handful of identified special orders to Indian workshops working for the VOC. Through the pleasant medium of analogous scenes, they glorify a leading political administrator, governor or person in charge of the major regal functions on the spot, who was always appointed by the Company at the time. He is perhaps represented here in the guise of a figure in a blue suit and red stockings, wearing a hat over his wig. The treatment of the scene in perspective, in the format of a painting, distinguishes our panel from other known examples, whose large format, lack of perspective and verticality of decoration link them to palempores used as wall hangings or bedspreads.
