OLD RING in 18K (750/°°) yellow gold and silver. Eighteenth - Lot 58
OLD RING in 18K (750/°°) yellow gold and silver. Eighteenth century period. Marquise set with 3 dutch rose-cut diamonds in closed setting and pearl setting on a silver plate, surrounded by grain-set sapphires, shouldered by 2 brilliant-cut diamonds. TDD: 49, PB: 8.9g. Small restorations. Legend has it that the marquise cut was invented in the 18th century by King Louis XV in honor of his favorite, the Marquise de Pompadour. Indeed, to immortalize the smile of the beautiful, the sovereign asks that a diamond is cut according to its shape. The precious stone then reminded him of a mouth, elongated and with tapered ends. It would seem that the marquises then appreciated this ring whose name allowed them to affirm their social rank.
