OLD RING in 18K (750/°°) yellow gold and silver. Restored 18th century. Marquise adorned with 3 Dutch rose-cut diamonds in closed and paillon setting on silver plate, surrounded by sapphires set with grain setting, shouldered with 2 brillant diamonds. TD 49, PB: 8.9g. Legend has it that the marquise cut was invented in the 18th century by King Louis XV in honour of his favourite, the Marquise de Pompadour. Indeed, to immortalize the smile of the beauty, the sovereign asked that a diamond be cut according to its shape. The precious stone then reminds one of a mouth, elongated and with tapered ends. It would seem that the marquises then appreciated this ring whose name allowed them to assert their social rank.
